4 Days desert Tour Fes to Marrakech Itinerary
Depart Fes early in the morning and travel south toward the Middle Atlas Mountains, passing rolling hills, forests, and charming Berber villages along the way. Your first stop is Ifrane, a picturesque town nicknamed “Little Switzerland” for its tidy streets, European-style architecture, and tranquil parks. Enjoy a short walk in the town center, admiring its unique buildings and alpine-style charm, and take in the crisp mountain air. Continue to Azrou, famous for its ancient cedar forests and playful Barbary apes. Stroll among the towering cedar trees, observe the monkeys in their natural habitat, and breathe in the fragrant forest air.
The journey continues through the scenic Middle Atlas plateau, passing traditional villages and terraced fields where local farmers work the land in a centuries-old rhythm. Stop in Midelt, a town nestled between two mountain ranges, known for its apples and stunning views. As the road descends toward Erfoud and Rissani, the scenery gradually transitions from lush mountains to desert-edge landscapes, dotted with palm groves, kasbahs, and rocky hills. Arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon, where camels await for a sunset trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes. Watch as the sand transforms into gold and orange under the setting sun, then enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner at your desert camp, accompanied by Berber music and the serenity of the Sahara under a star-filled sky.
Wake early to witness the magical sunrise over the dunes, when the first light bathes the desert in soft pink and golden hues. After breakfast, explore the desert landscapes further, either by camel or 4x4, visiting nearby nomadic Berber families to learn about their traditional desert lifestyle. Travel west toward the Todra Gorges, a spectacular canyon with vertical cliffs over 300 meters high. Take a leisurely walk along the river at the base of the gorge, enjoying the dramatic scenery and meeting local villagers who cultivate small gardens in the oasis.
Continue to the Dades Gorges, also known as the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs,” where winding roads snake through towering cliffs and verdant valleys. Stop at scenic viewpoints to admire the rugged landscape dotted with ancient kasbahs, palm groves, and small villages. Overnight stay in a hotel or riad in the Dades Valley, where you can enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner while taking in the serene mountain atmosphere.
After breakfast, continue west, leaving the Dades Valley behind and driving toward Ouarzazate, often called the “Gateway to the Desert.” Explore the impressive Taourirt Kasbah, a former palace of the Glaoui family, or visit the Atlas Film Studios, known for their role in many international films. Continue to the iconic Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Morocco’s most photographed locations. Wander the narrow streets, admire the mud-brick architecture, and take in panoramic views of the surrounding plains and mountains.
From here, cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass in the High Atlas Mountains, where dramatic mountain landscapes unfold with every twist and turn of the road. Stop at scenic viewpoints for photographs and to appreciate the rugged beauty of Morocco’s highlands. Descend into the fertile plains and arrive in Marrakech in the evening, where you can check into your riad or hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening in the vibrant Red City.
After breakfast at your riad or hotel, enjoy any final sightseeing or a stroll through the city. Then, you will be transferred to Marrakech Menara Airport for your departure, concluding your 4-day tour from Fes to Marrakech.
